 Chris Keeley

Chris Keeley - Environmental Conservation Studies
Chris interned at the Office of Sustainability, collaborating with faculty & staff to collect data for the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment, and Rating System (STARS). The program measures campus sustainability in three overarching categories; education & research, operations, and planning, administration & engagement. Chris' URC project showcased the results of his research and demonstrated why UNH is considered a national leader in sustainability. His presentation provided an analysis of UNH's strengths and weaknesses.

Valerie Schoepfer - Environmental Sciences
This project was designed to quantify the leaching capacities of several tropical tree species and the impacts of leaf leaching on stream biogeochemistry. Leaching rates were determined for fresh and senesced leaves, or leaves that have naturally fallen. Senesced leaves lost more carbon, nitrogen, and various other cations and anions than fresh leaves, possibly due to the degraded outer cuticle of senesced leaves. A whole stream mass balance approach was used to determine the total contribution of ionic inputs in grams per day from each tree species to the entire Quebrada Prieta stream in Puerto Rico. Tropical streams receive a large portion of their total energy from riparian tree species on a daily basis.
